Scope of Work
The project consisted of multiple security upgrades at an existing 230 kV substation, which included a new 8-foot tall high-security fence with cameras, lighting, access controls, and an intrusion detection system (IDS). The project also included a new pre-cast security equipment enclosure and a station service upgrade to support the security systems. The entire substation ground grid was also improved during this project.
Project Details
- Installed 1,590 linear feet of high-security fencing, utilizing embedded posts with two 24-foot slide gates and two pedestrian doors.
- Excavated, installed, and backfilled 3,000 linear feet of below grade conduit and pull boxes around interior perimeter.
- Pulled and terminated all cabling for the AC panelboards, lighting, and telecom cabinets.
- Installed above grade conduit for various access control features at the gates, including fence and building mounted cameras.
- Installed two 200 kVA Station Service Voltage Transformers and automatic transfer switches for the new station service upgrades.
- Installed approximately 22,500 linear feet of 500 copper ground wire throughout the substation and grounded all structures and equipment.
- Mounted 41 light fixtures on both the exterior fence and interior dead-end structures.
Lean, Innovative and Unique Project Solutions
As part of the station service upgrades, the team needed to cut over all the existing AC circuits from the old equipment to the new panels fed from the Station Service Voltage Transformers. System constraints prevented the team from having the ability to de-energize the 230 kV circuit breakers, and the team was tasked with terminating the new feeds in energized cabinets. The project team worked closely with the client relay team to develop a safe plan and successfully cut over all the new circuits. The team also demolished all the old equipment from the control house and had it completed over a two-week time period.
